“Had Chopper not been there, I would have been dead for sure. And they were armed to the hilt and it was an obvious ambush situation,” Navy SEAL Trevor Maroshek says of that fateful day in Afghanistan. [scroll down for video]

The day started with an alert that Taliban forces were seen approaching the compound. Maroshek and another SEAL grabbed their weapons and gear and went searching for bad guys.

As the pair came around a corner, they spotted an abandoned motorcycle, with it’s engine still hot. Obvious to the fact that this could be a setup, the SEALs allowed their partner to do what he does best.

Maroshek and his fellow SEAL told Chopper to patrol and look for threats and he instantly bolted into the brush on the side of the road. In the bushes, chopper found two Taliban fighters and attacked them both. The attackers were so engrossed in dealing with Chopper they didn’t even realize the SEALs were moving into a deadly position.

Alerted to possible enemies nearby, the two SEALs carefully approached.

“One of the guys popped out of the bushes not realizing that we were even there. And as soon as he did, Chopper had him by the rib cage actually, he came up & took one look at us” and took a bullet straight into the forehead. His fellow Taliban met the same fate after an even longer losing battle with Chopper. Like this:

The SEALs at the base would later learn the entire compound was on top of several hundred pounds of explosives planted before the SEALs even arrived. Maroshek believes the Taliban had infiltrated in an attempt to blow the explosives underneath, killing all 60 SEALs and some additional 12 Afghan civilians who were there at the time.

Maroshek says that it’s obvious the fighters never heard or saw Chopper and described his attack as “like a lightning bolt.” Here is a very well done interview and recreation of the attack by the Smithsonian Youtube Channel:
