FOR SCIENCE: Fighter Pilot Pours and Drinks from Glass While Doing Barrel Roll [VIDEO]

In what may be the coolest physics demonstration you will see this year, a fighter pilot pours water into a glass and then drinks from the glass while doing barrel rolls.

If it wasn’t for the fact that he’s upside down for much of the video, it would be a mundane video of a guy drinking water in a plane, instead it seems like magic.

Of course, magic is really just science you don’t understand and this is actually a perfect demonstration of centripetal force, or as Wikipedia explains ” force that makes a body follow a curved path. Its direction is always orthogonal to the motion of the body and towards the fixed point of the instantaneous center of curvature of the path. Isaac Newton described it as “a force by which bodies are drawn or impelled, or in any way tend, towards a point as to a centre”.

Here a more in depth explanation of centripetal force using the classic “water in a bucket” experiment.

But science is best explained through demonstration and, based on the look on this pilot’s face, he’s a big fan.

Sometimes, when your RIO (radar intercept officer) in the backseat is being cranky, you just need to get them a Snickers bar – this is the best way possible.

And on long flights, you might just need a barrel roll monster to keep you going.
