Our current president has about two more months in office, and he’s using his time to continue his agenda. This is to be expected. What few expected is that the sitting President of the United States would make public comments that fuel the riots and protests against President-Elect Donald Trump.

Yet the president has done just that by signaling his solidarity with those who continue to rail against the election results.

President Obama posed for photo-ops with Trump last week, and even there he appeared to have a hard time hiding his animosity. Yet he spoke in traditional platitudes that urged Americans to give Trump a chance.

“I don’t think he is ideological. I think ultimately he is pragmatic in that way and that can serve him well as long as he has got good people around him and he has a good sense of direction,” Obama said.

Later, when speaking to his distraught and emotional staffers, he chided them. “This is not the apocalypse,” Obama said. While these words don’t embody the leadership that many would hope to see from an outgoing president, Obama appears to have a realistic approach to the democratic loss.

Yet his remarks delivered at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin have left his critics fuming:

“I’ve been the subject of protests during the course of my eight years and I suspect that there’s not a president in our history that hasn’t been subject to these protests. So, I would not advise people who feel strongly or who are concerned about some of the issues that have been raised during the course of the campaign, I wouldn’t advise them to be silent.”

On the surface, this appears to be a simple enough response. Obama doesn’t encourage the protestors to be silent. And he knows what protests against a president can be like. Yet the protestors are not simply raising their voices. They’re endangering public safety by blocking interstates. They’re destroying property, breaking windows, setting dumpsters on fire. They’re engaging in overt vote-shaming on social media.

In short, many of the protestors railing against Trump’s win are engaging in the exact tactics the democrats warned the nation would see if Trump would lose the election. And Obama has done nothing to encourage the citizens of this country to demonstrate peacefully and obey the rule of law.
