Jessica Allen knows the joys of motherhood. After having two children of her own, she decided to become a surrogate for couples who could not have children of their own. Allen agreed to carry a child for a Chinese couple and immediately became pregnant with one of the inserted embryos. But six weeks into her pregnancy, she found out she was pregnant with two children, not one.

Originally, Allen and her doctor thought that she was having twins. “He started moving the ultrasound around and he goes, ‘Well I definitely see that there is another baby,'” Allen said. “The chance of an embryo splitting is very small, but it does happen, and I just thought … I was very surprised.”
She then proceeded to give birth to the two children but noticed some oddities. For one, the two infants looked nothing alike. Second, one of the infants was a much lighter color than the other baby, according to the Daily Mail.
Allen claimed that she never got to see the babies in person but was shown a picture later and noticed the differences. Months after giving birth, Allen and her doctor came to the conclusion that the lighter skinned child could be her biological child.
Allen, whose husband is African American, decided to do a DNA test. To the surprise of Allen and her doctor, the lighter skinned child was indeed her own. She had become pregnant with her own child after she was already carrying the Chinese couple’s child, according to ABC News.
“I don’t know how to describe it … we were floored,” Allen said. “We were like, how did this happen?” Doctors told her that this situation is an extremely rare one that is referred to as “superfetation”.
This happens when a woman ovulates after she is already pregnant. After a turbulent custody hearing, Allen received custody of her own child back from the surrogate couple. Allen’s husband, Wardell Jasper, was equally amazed by how all of this came to fruition.
He explained that he had carried his own baby and handed it over to another couple without the knowledge that the child was actually his own.
Allen and Wardell were caught off guard but nevertheless immensely happy. “Wardell and I, who got married in April, weren’t planning to expand our family so soon, but we treasure Malachi with all our hearts.”
