At age 21, Wyley Simpson began transitioning from female to male. He was on testosterone therapy and was told by doctors, after he stopped having periods, that he would not be able to become pregnant. However, in February 2018, Simpson discovered that he was pregnant, and has since given birth to a baby boy.
Simpson, now 28, lives in Texas with 28-year-old Stephen Gaeth, his fiancé. After finding out about the pregnancy, the pair were initially worried that they weren’t ready to become parents but chose to move forward with the pregnancy.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, Simpson battled “abuse and judgment” from strangers on essentially a daily basis.
Simpson still has female reproductive organs, which made the pregnancy possible. However, he had not had a period “in years,” leading the couple to believe that a pregnancy would not occur.
“We talked about testosterone and what I had been told by his doctors and what we had believed to be truth. Turns out, that wasn’t truth,” he stated.
Simpson found out he was pregnant about 11 weeks after conceiving, clued in by his battle with morning sickness.
“I was nervous. I was very emotional, I started crying. I didn’t know what to do,” he said, recalling the surprise pregnancy.
Discussing the pregnancy, Simpson stated, “It’s not every day that someone sees a pregnant man walking down the road, so we received a fair amount of abuse.”
“I would be told that I’ll never be a man, ‘men don’t carry babies,’ and everyone called me ‘it,’” he added.
In September 2018, Simpson gave birth to Rowan, a 7 lb. 5 oz. baby boy, via emergency C-section.
Simpson had already had surgery to remove his female breasts, making breastfeeding impossible, and intends to complete his transition in the future.
He asserted that their son made the negative comments worth it, but admits he would not go through the ordeal again.
He has since resumed testosterone therapy, and the couple has settled into family life.
“Once my physical bump had disappeared, and I was able to take my hormones again, I felt good about everything,” said Simpson.
“Myself and Stephan suddenly turned into a gay couple with a baby, as opposed to me being a pregnant man,” he continued. “And Rowan is amazing, he made all of the mental and physical pain completely worth it.”
“Now myself and Stephan are just reveling in fatherhood,” he added, “and can’t wait to continue our journey as a family.”
