The end of 2016 and beginning of 2017 has been a crazy ride. We’ve experienced everything from the 2016 Summer Olympics to the end of the Presidential Election cycle and more! Now the World Press holds it’s annual World Press Photo Contest. From 80,408 pictures, only 129 photos were chosen. These are the top 25.
The photos range from political events to world news to beautiful landscapes. The collection is supposed to capture life at the moment and the selected pictures will be displayed in a traveling exhibit for all to see.
Starting off with the Photo of the Year, we have Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş who was photographed shouting after shooting Andrey Karlov, who was the Russian ambassador to Turkey, during the art gallery in Ankara, Turkey.
Next on the list is the viral photo of smiling Usain Bolt as he darts past his competitors at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and winning the 100-meter semi-final sprint.
Ieshia Evans, activist, made headlines with this emotional photograph at the protests in Baton Rouge, Lousiana. Evans is pictured extending her hands to the riot police as they charge her. Truly remarkable.
This photograph was taken at the funeral procession of Fidel Castro in Santa Clara, Cuba. For a country that has struggled for so many years, the raw emotions of dedication to their leader is captured perfectly in this photograph.
This picture of Najiba was taken after a bomb explosion went off in Kabul and injured her two-year-old nephew, Shabir. War doesn’t stop for anyone and this photo depicts the struggle that combat-ridden areas go through everyday.
Lastly, we have this photograph of a family evacuating the chaos of the war-filled city of Mosul, which is Iraq’s second largest city. The combat can be visible in the background as the oil fields burned in Qayyar, Iraq.
