Small acts of kindness can be incredibly powerful. Showing compassion to a stranger can often go further than one would initially expect, as Brooke Ochoa discovered when she held a restaurant door open for an elderly woman. Ochoa believed she was just being polite, and then decided to take the simple gesture a step further.
Ochoa, a resident of Louise, Texas, was heading into a restaurant for lunch in 2015 when she saw an elderly woman heading toward the door. She held the door open and waited patiently, allowing the woman, Delores, to enter.
However, just moments later, she heard a comment that prompted her to take the simple act of kindness a step further.
Delores requested a table for one once she came into the restaurant. Ochoa, who was also planning to dine alone, decided to see if the woman wanted some company while she ate.
“I’m eating by myself too,” said Ochoa, according to a report by Newsner, “Would you like to have lunch together?”
Delores was more than happy to accept Ochoa’s offer, delighted to have some company while she dined.
The pair struck up a quick friendship, talking at length as they enjoyed their meal.
Delores told Ochoa that she had been going through a challenging time recently.
“Come to find out, she spent the last decade living with her mom, who recently passed away, and her aunt, who recently was put into a nursing home,” Ochoa wrote on Facebook.
“She has been having a hard time being alone.”
“She just kept smiling and saying thank you for listening to me, which made me smile too!” Ochoa added. “Her words healed my heart just as much as I healed her lonely one.”
The pair enjoyed their conversation so much that they decided to meet every Thursday going forward.
In a later update, Ochoa announced that Delores passed away not long after their first meeting, making the fact that she reached out to the elderly woman even more powerful, as neither of them knew that Delores had only a little more time on this earth when they met.
