The Catholic Church has placed a renewed emphasis on exorcising demons of late. That may explain why one priest slapped a baby he was supposed to be baptizing. When the child wouldn’t stop crying, the priest struck the child. The move seemed a bit violent for a priest, and the parents didn’t take too kindly to the move.
The slap clearly took the parents by surprise. This was, after all, supposed to have been a celebratory moment for the family’s new addition. When the priest first manhandled the child, and then slapped him, the parents stepped in.
They pulled the baby away from the priest, something that hardly ever happens in the patriarchal institution.
It remains unclear when the baptism occurred, but the language on the video is French.
“Calm down, calm down, you must calm down,” the priest says as the child refuses to be consoled. The he takes the child’s face in his hands, rather roughly. The priest seems very annoyed.
Then the slap.
“His aggression prompts an immediate reaction as the baby cries more loudly,” The Daily Mail writes, “its relatives look shocked and another woman comes over to try to calm the situation by putting her hand on the clergyman’s chest as if to hold him back.”
“There, you have to calm yourself, you have to calm yourself, there, there,” the priest says.
It is unclear if the priest was talking to the child, the parents, or admonishing himself.
