Pope Francis is an enigma to many. He has broken with many traditions since becoming Pope and has been more outspoken than many of his predecessors. He even censored President Trump about building a wall and faced backlash for it. But nothing may anger people more than his announcement that the Lord’s Prayer could use an “update.”

During a TV interview on Wednesday, Pope Francis proclaimed that the one line “lead us not into temptation” was a misinterpretation of what God meant and is “not a good translation.”

He suggested a possible modification that would provide a better alternative. “A father doesn’t do that,” Pope Francis said. “He helps you get up right away. What induces into temptation is Satan.”

The verse comes from the New Testament, and Pope Francis has angered some by his suggestion and left some wondering how much power a Pope should have.

When he announced this possible change, many declared he was trying to change or neglect the original text.

The Washington Post reported the Catholic Church in France updated the verse to reflect what Pope Francis insisted should reference what God was saying.

On Sunday, the Catholic Church changed the original verse from “Don’t expose us to temptation” to “Don’t let us enter into temptation.”In turn, the hashtag “Leave the Lord’s Prayer alone!” started to trend on social media.

According to the New York Times, Philip F. Lawler, editor of Catholic World News, understands where Pope Francis is coming from but thinks for the Pope to think he has the right to change a verse that has been richly engrained in the Catholic religion is “very upsetting.”

The 80-year-old tried to substantiate his claim by arguing “It is not God who tempts us into sin but the enemy of human nature. But tradition and familiarity are also important factors in weighing up any decision to modify a translation.”

Pope Francis has never been one to shy away from controversy, and it appears he will not be shying away from saying what he believes — even if the masses find it controversial.
