A large caravan of Honduran migrants is continuing to push northward. While many early reports Friday suggested that the caravan had been stopped at the southern border of Mexico, it is now clear that they have not. After clashing with police in riot gear, the caravan broke through the border and entered Mexico.

Some of the riot police that met the migrants tried to turn them back with force. They launched tear gas, and met them with riot shields. Yet the group, believed to number more than 4,000, was more than the police could handle.

The first attempts to stop them came in Tecun Uman, Guatemala. The group then crossed a bridge into Ciudad Hidalgo in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

“After crossing the bridge,” The Daily Mail writes, “they were confronted by a daunting force of armed Mexican officers who threw tear gas in their direction and stood in lines, lifting up children who ran towards them and standing firm behind their shields.”

“After a standoff, they agreed they would let some of the migrants through and started asking that they form lines.”

The United States has been working with Mexican officials on plans for sheltering any asylum seekers. It is unclear how many of the estimated 4,000 might seek asylum.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Mexico working on the diplomatic end to the caravan. It is unclear what his visit has accomplished.

The United States was pushing to keep the migrants on the southern side of the Mexican border. Now that they’re across, they are moving slowly toward The United States.

The slow moving group prompted President Trump to ask Mexico to intervene on Thursday. If they didn’t, Trump tweeted, he would shut down the U.S. border with the military.

“The stern, tweeted warning came as a group of more than 4,000 travels north through Mexico in the hope of reaching the United States, despite having no visas or other legal papers to enter,” The Daily Mail writes.

“I am watching the Democrat Party led (because they want Open Borders and existing weak laws) assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, whose leaders are doing little to stop this large flow of people, INCLUDING MANY CRIMINALS, from entering Mexico to U.S…..”

“….In addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have almost no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught – and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!..”

“….The assault on our country at our Southern Border, including the Criminal elements and DRUGS pouring in, is far more important to me, as President, than Trade or the USMCA. Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border. All Democrats fault for weak laws!”

It appears the threat, though, hasn’t worked. The group is still advancing.

“Our nation faces a dangerous crisis on the border that threatens American communities,” DHS spokesperson Katie Waldman wrote in a statement. “Congress refuses to close catch-and-release loopholes in the law that would allow authorities to detain and remove family units safely and expeditiously. While we do not have official numbers to report at this time, current trends indicate enforcement efforts against single adults entering illegally have been hugely successful.”

“However, the removal of actual family units, or those posing as family units, has been made virtually impossible by Congressional inaction – which will most likely result in record numbers of families arriving illegally in the United States this year. At the direction of the President, DHS is continuing to examine all options to secure the border and keep American communities safe, including working with our partners in Central America and Mexico.”
