There are few topics in America more controversial than guns. Add kids to that conversation and things escalate quickly. Some feel like kids should have no exposure to guns, at all. Others, like Carey Hart, see things differently. They believe kids should be educated and that experience is the best teacher. But that won’t placate the trolls.
Carey Hart, who is married to Pink, posted an video on Instagram, Wednesday, showing his daughter Willow shooting a gun. There’s nothing inherently violent about the video, but it didn’t go over well.
“Haven’t poked the parent police bear in a few days. Willz and I shooting the 22 rifle. She is getting pretty good. Can hit a 12 inch pie plate from 30 yards. Started her shooting at 3yrs old. For the record non of us hunt, just enjoy shooting for sport. I’m raising the kids with knowledge of fire arms, how to handle them, shoot them, store them, and avoid them in uneducated hands. #knowledgeispower”
The video is rather bland, actually. Willz is wearing ear protection. She’s firing a rimfire. She looks through the scope, asks permission to shoot, and then asks about the status of the gun’s safety. If there’s anything to fault Hart for, it is not having her take the safety off herself.
But that’s not what the trolls hit on.
“There is absolutely no reason why a three-year-old needs to be shooting a gun,” one person wrote. “It is just indoctrinating the toxic American culture that guns are somehow ‘cool’ and a ‘hobby.'”
Willz is 7, but she started young.
“That is your opinion,” Hart responded cordially. “I never slam people for speaking their opinion. I enjoy debate and shedding light on subjects that are sensitive like this. Now when you disrespect my country or ‘culture’ I feel I have every right to get nasty.”
Others in the comment section went off on the premise that Willz could easily turn the gun on him, while he is shooting the video. Yet the girl is already demonstrating a mastery of the skills needed to handle a rifle, and Hart is showing his trust in her.
Others simply blasted to whole premise. They ranted about Hart and gun culture and the perceived links to violence.
“Now I understand that you don’t ‘give a fuck it’s my 2nd amendment right’ but I sure as hell do. For one I NEVER block anyone, but you are free to unfollow me since my American ways so deeply bother you. Goodbye,” he responded.
