A man who sexually assaulted three children under the age of 10 on more than one occasion has claimed an unorthodox defense — he is a 9-year-old boy trapped in the body of an adult. He was arrested on Monday and made a video confession of his alleged crimes. He is being held without bail.
Joseph Roman has been accused of sexually assaulting two six-year-olds and an eight-year-old from 2015 to 2018. The 38-year-old was charged with predatory criminal sexual assault.
According to the Daily Wire, Roman’s victims were the daughters of his friends. The prosecution is still looking to see if the parents were involved in any way. While that seems unlikely, investigators want to be thorough.
Court documents revealed one of the female victims lived with Roman after the child’s family moved into his home. The sexual assault is thought to have occurred when the parents of the child were sleeping.
Another incident with a separate child happened after the child’s mother began working a job at night. Roman would offer to watch the child where he would sexually assault the child for hours until the mother returned home.
The Chicago Tribune reported that the sexual assaults continued after the children and their families moved out of Roman’s home. The last victim was sexually assaulted for over a year.
Prosecutors divulged in court that Roman was confronted by a family member of the most recent victim. Roman has been charged with a class X felony, one of the most serious offenses in the book besides murder.
Typically, other class X felony cases carry a minimum 6-30 year prison sentence. Additionally, if the defendant is found guilty, he will not be subject to probation or early release.
Roman is expected to be back in court next week. It is unclear if a lawyer will continue to use Roman’s unorthodox reasoning as a defense strategy.
