Gun theft is a serious issue. Stolen guns are often used in crimes in the hopes of protecting the identity of the shooter. Not surprisingly, guns are often stolen from homes that are burglarized. But it’s isn’t often that you hear of someone having their gun stolen from their holster while they were wearing it.

Home surveillance footage on Feb.14 showed a teenage boy sneaking up behind an armed 31-year-old Wichita, Kansas, man. The man was working on his car with his gun holster on his hip when the teen, who was dressed in a grey hoodie, came into the camera’s frame.

Unaware of the teen’s presence, the man continues to work on his car, which surely has music playing. It isn’t until the teen grabs his 9mm off his hip that he turns around. As the man hesitates, probably deciding if he should rush the teen, the teen told the man to “back away,” according to Kansas.com.

The teen can be seen running out of frame and down an alley where, according to witnesses, he fired a few shots back at the gun’s owner who was chasing after him. Police searched the area and had no luck finding the perpetrator.

More than a month after the incident happened, police still didn’t have much to go on. After much publicity and the local police asking for help to recover the gun, a 14-year-old boy was arrested in connection to the gun theft.

Thankfully, a citizen recognized the young boy in the recently-made-public video and made a tip to police. The teen was taken to a nearby juvenile detention center on charges of suspicion of committing an aggravated assault, theft and possession of paraphernalia.

Now, sure, the victim was in his rights to carry anywhere he chooses, but he didn’t do himself any favors putting himself in this situation by being completely unaware of his surroundings. If he would have worn an active retention holster, this could have been a very different story.
