Hasbro has created countless iterations of their world-renowned board game “Monopoly” using everything from films such as Star Wars and Batman to specific boards designed for colleges and universities. For people who are always on the lookout for the next one, Hasbro has created a new controversial one entitled “Ms. Monopoly.”

Hasbro announced that in the new Ms. Monopoly game women will make more than the men in the game, apparently as a nod to the gender wage gap in America.

For instance, women will start with $1,900 in Monopoly money at the beginning of the game, while the male counterpart will only start at $1,500.

According to CNN, women will collect $240 Monopoly dollars when they pass “go,” while men will only obtain $200. Hasbro issued a statement that it’s “a fun new take on the game that creates a world where women have an advantage often enjoyed by men. But don’t worry, if men play their cards right, they can make more money too.”

For whatever reason, Hasbro thought it was smart to implement real-world problems into a board game that typically caters to children.

Another difference in this iteration is that players will invest in women-invented products like chocolate chip cookies and Wi-Fi, instead of the typical building or business purchases found in the classic game, CNBC reported.

There is no denying that the gender wage gap in America is a real issue, but many have questioned why this needs to be implemented into a board game of all things.

Jen Boswinkel, Senior Director of Global Brand Strategy and Marketing at Hasbro, issued this statement: “We want to recognize and celebrate the many contributions women have made to our society and continue to make on a daily basis,” she stated.

Ms. Monopoly will be in stores in mid-September for the price of $19.99.
