When Catrina Alexander’s daughter – 17-year-old Macy Smith –missed curfew on June 7 and didn’t call, she knew something was wrong. Alexander opened a tracking app on her phone and began driving toward Smith’s location. She came across a set of tire tracks and found her daughter pinned by her vehicle in a ravine.
Alexander knew something wasn’t right when Smith hadn’t checked in and missed curfew. “The lack of response was out of character for her,” said the North Carolina mother.
Fearing the worst, Alexander opened up the Find My Friends app, according to a report by KCTV 5. After finding her daughter’s location, she hopped in her car and headed that way.
“I can’t explain watching the GPS on my phone, with the dot for my phone getting close to hers and then suddenly seeing the tire tracks,” said Alexander.
When she arrived at the location, Alexander found her daughter pinned under her car, which was sitting about 25 feet down an embankment on Pilot Mountain.
By the time she was found, Smith had been trapped for around seven hours.
“I will never forget the sound of my family calling out my name when they found me around 10:30 pm,” said Smith in a Facebook post on June 8.
“I hydroplaned at 4:00 pm and ran in between 2 trees down an embankment, flipped my car 3 times, and landed in my back seat with my arm pinned in between the car and the ground.”
Smith had struggled to remain calm after the accident. “I searched for my phone to call for help but the only thing in sight was my bible,” Smith wrote. “I held on to my bible and prayed harder than I had ever prayed before.”
Along with a broken neck, Smith also had severe nerve damage in her left arm, saying she had lost feeling in it. On June 9, Smith was able to move her fingers again.
“I do not deserve to be here right now, but God has bigger plans for me,” wrote Smith. “I ask that everyone continues to pray for me as I will have upcoming surgeries, therapy, and struggles to face within the next couple of weeks. I will keep everyone updated as best as I can but for now PLEASE pray for me and my family.”
