While Trenton McKinley was riding in a small utility trailer being towed by his friend, who was driving a dune buggy. When his friend suddenly hit the brakes, the trailer flipped, causing 13-year-old McKinley to tumbled onto the concrete below. The trailer also landed on top of his head, causing multiple skull fractures and injuring his brain.
A few days after McKinley was declared brain dead, his parents made the heartbreaking to donate his organs and end his life, according to a report by People.
However, after his parents signed the organ donation paperwork, McKinley miraculously awoke.
“I hit the concrete, and the trailer landed on top of my head,” said McKinley during an interview. “After that, I don’t remember anything.”
After the accident, which took place in Alabama, according to McKinley’s mother, Jennifer Reindl, her son had been dead for 15 minutes as she arrived at the hospital in Mobile.
“All I saw was a stretcher with his feet handing out. He was dead a total of 15 minutes,” said Reindl. “When he came back, [the doctors] said he would never be normal again. They told me the oxidation problems would be so bad in his brain, that he would be a vegetable if he even made it.”
McKinley had multiple skull fractures and was in kidney failure “due to the lack of oxygen after his cardiac arrest,” said a Facebook post.
A few days after McKinley was declared brain dead, his parents were given a choice.
“They said the next time his heart stopped they had to let him die… this was [Saturday],” said Reindl on Facebook. “Or I could sign a paper to donate his organs to save five other kids.”
She added that if she signed the organ donation forms, “they would keep hitting him with adrenaline till Monday… so I signed it.”
“His eyes were solid black and dry,” she added, “and I knew he would not hesitate to save 5 more lives.”
“The next day I got a call,” Reindl continued. “They canceled the final brainwave test.”
“Right before they hooked him up his hand moved Then his feet,” she said. “So they looked at his eyes and they were back… he had blue eyes… now they are green with small white specks like glitter.”
“They say when you look upon god… pigment changes… and my baby was in heaven for a whole day… he is a miracle.”
McKinley has had a total of three brain surgeries and is continuing to work toward recovery. A video on Facebook shows him sinking a basket during rehab, and another shows him taking a stroll while using a walker.
McKinley said he felt like he was in heaven during the time he was unconscious.
“I was in an open field walking straight,” said McKinley. “There’s no other explanation but God. There’s no other way. Even doctors said it.”
