A father of five was found dead on a path near the woods on the 4th of July. Authorities found the man with over 100 bites on his body, which they concluded was due to an “animal attack.” A pack of six stray pit bull dogs was found in the wooded area near the body and captured.
Melvin Olds Jr. was taking a shortcut to his Lake Placid, Florida, home on Independence Day when he was reportedly mauled by the dogs. The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office claimed they took DNA evidence from the dogs to match with Olds, but they announced it would take some time for those results to come back, Fox News reported.
According to the autopsy, Olds had no injuries other than the multiple bite marks that riddled his body. The bite marks are in line with the bite of a pit bull dog as they have distinctive mouths when compared to other breeds.
Animal control captured the six strays after they set traps, the Daily Mail reported. The sheriff department is asking for anyone to report stray dogs. “While we may have the dogs that were responsible for this horrible tragedy, we won’t know for sure for a while,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said in a press conference.
“I want to encourage residents of Highway Park and the surrounding area to be on the lookout for any loose dogs, especially those that seem aggressive. We don’t want anyone else to be injured.”
Olds mother, Cynthia Hill, was understandably saddened by the passing of her son. “I thought a dog was a man’s best friend,” she told WFLA, before adding: “He was a good person, a good man. Just so hurt, deeply because it’s so unexpected.”
Olds was engaged to Jannell Ward who stated that she had seen stray dogs in the area they live in, with some growling at her. “They never came at me or insinuated that they were going to bite me. I never got that feeling.”
To help with the cost of funeral expenses, Hill has created a GoFundMe account for her son’s funeral cost.
