When a 38-year-old man gave reporters an eye-witness video, the police found something compelling in his story. Matthew Haverly talked about the body that had been found in the creek near his house. Yet the reporter may have picked up on something in his demeanor, and before the interview was over, the police had enough to arrest Haverly on suspicion of murder.
The body was found in a creek in Wyalusing Township, Pennsylvania. “It was some kind of hit,” Haverly said in his interview. This was before the body was identified. This supposed hit, as it turned out, took place across the street from Haverly’s house. And the body, it turned out was his mother.
“I’m like, ‘What they hell is going on?’ And now I realize that’s what they were actually doing,” he told WNEP. “I had no clue. It’s sad to say that that’s someone’s either daughter, mother or whatever.”
Patricia Haverly was someone’s mother. She was killed on May 31. Matthew Haverly was arrested the next day.
“I think it was some kind of a hit, and something happened,” he said. “Something went bad, and this is like a rural area, so they just wanted to plant the body somewhere else besides wherever the hell they were from.”
“It would be like a place where people from the city would want to put a body because most likely it wouldn’t be found,” he said.
“I’m guessing my mother, she would be concerned. Probably a lot of the other neighbors would be concerned.”
The motive for the murder has not been stated, yet. Patricia Haverly was killed by severe head injuries. The body was disposed of, wrapped in plastic, in the creek.
“It’s heartbreaking because he comes across concerned, and that’s what’s scary because you don’t know what’s going on next door at your neighbor’s house,” another local resident, Vanessa Billings, told the news crew.
Haverly has also been charged with abuse of a corpse.
