A parent’s greatest fear is not being able to protect their children, especially from a home intruder. On April 14, Tina Burton, a mother of three, and her boyfriend Ali Bracey were sleeping. Around 7 a.m. they heard a loud crash in the eldest daughter’s bedroom. Bracey approached the bedroom only to find a man in the room wearing only his underwear.

Bracey recognized the intruder as Donald Oliver, their neighbor. “He got undressed in my daughter’s room,” Burton explained. “Like, what was your intentions? … You are sick.”
Burton praised her daughter’s quick thinking as she was able to get out of the situation before something more sinister took place.
“She was really smart,” Burton said. “She hid under the cover, turned her light down, turned her volume down on her phone to text me. When she peeked under the cover to see where he was at, she got up and ran away. She went to the back room. And I think that was really brave and smart of her.”
Bracey slowly got the man into the kitchen and demanded he leave their home. “I told him to get out, and he didn’t want to move. And he growled at me,” Bracey told WBRD.
When Oliver refused to leave, the incident turned violent. Bracey began hitting the 38-year-old neighbor with anything he could get his hands on in the kitchen, including a broom and mop.
The two scuffled for a minute before Burton, who legally owns a firearm, handed the gun to Bracey. Bracey shot Oliver six times before he finally retreated from the residence. “He ended up getting six shots, period,” Bracey said.
Police responded to the shots fired and determined Oliver was the aggressor. After following the blood trail, law enforcement found Oliver and took him to the hospital. He ended up surviving his gunshot wounds and underwent six different surgeries.
Officers canvased the home for additional evidence and discovered a small bag of heroin, which officers surmise fell out of Oliver’s clothes as he was undressing in the eldest’s daughter room. According to the Truth About Guns, Oliver was arrested in 2001 after he impregnated a 15-year-old girl.
Bracey will not face charges.
