The collision happened in Los Angeles’ Sylmar neighborhood. According to Trejo, the accident took place right in front of him, which left one vehicle overturned. Concerned for the safety of those inside, Trejo immediately jumped in to help.

The woman who was driving the overturned vehicle crawled out of the vehicle and appeared to be injured. She pleaded for people around her to help her young child in the backseat.

When he approached the overturned vehicle, Trejo noticed a child was still in the baby seat as it hung upside down. “The only thing that saved the little kid was his car seat,” the actor told a photographer who was present at the scene.

The injured driver was later identified as the grandmother of the child. Trejo explained that he distracted the child as firefighters worked on his grandmother.

“He was panicked. I said OK, we have to use our superpowers. So he screamed ‘superpowers’ and we started yelling ‘superpowers,” Trejo told ABC 7. “I said do this, with the muscles. He said ‘muscles.'”

He added: “We got kind of a bond. I kept facing him away from the accident.”

A good Samaritan named Monica Johnson helped Trejo rescue the child, CNN reported. The woman crawled through the broken window to undo the baby’s seatbelt before Trejo took the baby out the adjacent window.

“I pulled the baby out of the other side,” he said. Johnson recalled the incident. “She was hurt, but all she said was, ‘Get my baby. Get my baby,'” she said.

When asked why he decided to help out, Trejo explained he was simply paying the good deed forward. “Everything good that has happened to me has happened as a direct result of helping someone else,” he said. “Everything.”

According to police, a car running a red light caused the accident.
