“Zaevion Dobson, a 15-year-old Fulton High School student and football player, was struck and killed after he had jumped on top of three girls to shield them from the shooters,” Knoxville police Chief David Rausch said following a series of gang related shootings in the Tennessee city.

Brandon Perry, a 23 year old man with gang ties, started the incidents which led to Dobson’s death when he shot his mother.

Perry then began shooting people indiscriminately, which is when Dobson was shot multiple times while shielding three girls from the gunfire.

Perry later died after being shot to death in what is believed to be a gun battle with officers after he crashed his BMW into the side of an apartment building.

Two other suspects who were in the BMW were detained by police. They both had gang ties as well.

The three girls that Dobson died protecting were not injured.
