There’s a lesson lurking in here somewhere. It might be this: leave criminal investigations to the police. That might have prevented this debacle that left a woman with a crossbow bolt in her face. And she wasn’t even the intended target. It was meant for her son. She pushed him out of the way at the last second and has the scars to show for it.

If you’re bothered by graphic images, this might not be the story for you. It is hard to look at. Janet Partain, from Wynne, Arkansas, had driven her son and two nephews, all teenagers, to confront a man about stolen property.

Joseph Avellino, 34, wasn’t cooperative. He didn’t like being accused of theft, and began threatening the three others with a loaded crossbow.

At one point, Partain saw that Avellino was going to fire the crossbow and she pushed her son out of the way. In doing so, she was shot in the face.

The broad-head on the bolt cut through her face.

“The 34-year-old shared a photo of her horrifying injuries while in hospital,” The Daily Mail writes. “In one picture, the arrow is still protruding from her face as blood poured from the gash. Later photos show the mom with the arrow removed, and her face stitched up.”

“My face is throbbing and I can’t shut one of my eyes,” she told reporters.

“It was an odd sight to see someone with an arrow in their face and they’re still conscious and talking to me,” Cross County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jeff Nichols said.

The fate of the shooter seems to be in question. Avellino was arrested Monday, but he was rumored to have been out of jail Tuesday despite being charged with battery in the first degree and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

“I told him, Joseph I don’t want you on my property no more, this and that,” Partain explained from the hospital. “And he was like, ‘Well I’m going to shoot ya’ll’. He was pointing the arrow at them and he fired a shot at one of them, and I pushed them out the way and I got hit.”

“I think I was in shock because once I got hit I said, ‘I can’t believe you almost shot that kid’.”

“When I said I would take a bullet or whatever for my kids!! I meant that!! And I did just that!!” she later wrote on social media.
