The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on Conway Blvd in Port Charlotte, Florida last week after receiving reports of an unidentified man trying to breaking into a home. When police arrived at the scene, the suspect had already fled the area.
As they canvased the area, the body of 15-year-old Khyler Edman was found. Khyler’s five-year-old sister was found “uninjured,” Fox News reported.
Shortly after the incident, the sheriff department received 911 calls of an injured man walking down the road from where the home invasion took place. The burglary suspect, 27-year-old Ryan Clayton Cole, was stopped by officers after he tried to flee the area.
After a short foot pursuit, Cole was taken into custody and charged with burglary and petty theft from a separate home invasion. Police are investigating that home invasion as well with additional charges expected to be filed in the near future.
Sheriff Bill Prummell issued a statement detailing the horrific event. “The suspect broke into this residence a violent encounter ensued where we believe that teenager was trying to protect the home and protect their younger sibling,” he said.
The family of Khyler has asked for privacy in this trying time. The family created a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of his burial.
“On September 26, Khyler lost his life being a hero protecting his five-year-old sister, when a man broke in our home in Port Charlotte. Please help my family at this time give Khyler a proper burial he deserves, he was only 15 years old and lost his life due to a senseless act of a stranger. My son had a long life ahead of him, that was taken too soon. I have given Crystal Stone and Chad Ackermann permission to help my family at this time,” the post reads.
