There’s no argument that Piers Morgan definitely falls on the progressive side of the political spectrum and is no fan of President-Elect Donald Trump.
So, it might come as a surprise to some that the editor of the Daily Mail used a front page article today to call out the actress for using her Golden Globes acceptance speech to strongly criticize the president.

Streep was the recipient of the Golden Globes Lifetime Achievement Award last night and during her acceptance speech she strongly criticized the president-elect and many of his supporters, and apparently, sports fans.
Streep said that if ‘outsiders and foreigners’ weren’t part of Hollywood, ‘you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.’
‘There were many powerful performances this year that did breathtaking, compassionate work,’ she said. ‘But there was one performance that stunned me. It sank it hooks in my heart, not because it was good – there’s nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege and power and the capacity to fight back,’ she continued.
‘It kind of broke my heart when I saw it,’ she said, ‘and I still can’t get it out of my head. This instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.’
Well Morgan took some level of offense with Streep’s comments, saying in a Daily Mail piece:
Wow. I haven’t heard such elitist snobbery since Hillary Clinton branded Trump supporters ‘a basket of deplorables’.
For your information, Ms Streep, tens of millions of ordinary Americans love football and the MMA and would be quite happy watching their favourite sports at the expense of the next Woody Allen film.
That’s a solid point, but it wasn’t Morgan’s main point in the piece. He wanted to call out Streep’s and to a greater degree, Hollywood’s hypocrisy when it comes to their criticism of Donald Trump and politicians as a whole.
At this point, I laughed out loud with incredulity.
Not at the words themselves, which are laudable.
No, it was at the hypocrisy.
You’d be hard-pushed to find an industry that encourages more disrespect and violence than Hollywood.
A place where rich powerful people make billions of dollars by regularly pandering to the lowest common denominators of sexism, racism, homophobia and misogyny.
And happily exploit ever more hideous, graphic violence to make a fast, easy buck.
And seethe from every tinsel-encrusted pore with the very kind of nasty, power-based bullying that Meryl Streep claims to be so incensed by in Trump.
When you have basically the entire internet criticizing your speech, the president-elect calling you out and a progressive news editor known for his over the top liberal tirades, you’re probably doing something wrong. It seems, in fact, that the only people Streep’s speech resonated with were other multi-millionaire movie stars in the room who were in attendance at yet another awards show hosted for and by Hollywood elites to slap each other on the back.
Here is the video of Streep’s speech in case you haven’t seen it yet:
