Traffic stops are, more often than not, stressful for those being pulled over. This incident, though, shows just how quickly a traffic stop can become life-threatening for the officers. When the sheriff’s deputy tried to pull over this illegal immigrant, the man seemed like he intended to comply, but then immediately opened fire.

The incident occurred near Tontitown, Arkansas. Luis Cobos-Cenobio, 29, was pulled over early Sunday afternoon.

Washington County Corporal Brett Thompson stepped out of his vehicle to speak with Cobos-Cenobio, but the man slid out of the driver’s side door and began firing at Thompson.

Thompson returned fire, but didn’t hit Cobos-Cenobio.

In the exchange, a vehicle can be seen rounding the corner. The car pulls to a stop beside the gunfight, then the driver backs up, all the way around the turn to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.

Cobos-Cenobio tried to find an angle that would allow him to hit Thompson, but he wasn’t successful. He eventually returned to the car and sped off–just a few hundred yards up the road.

The car then stopped again and a female passenger got out of the vehicle.

Julie Smithson said her husband Ryan was also a witnesses. “So thankful for God’s protection over my husband, Ryan, this afternoon,” she wrote. “He was directly behind the police officer’s car when this started and was able to back up and take cover. Also thankful for our law enforcement and their quick response.”

Cobos-Cenobio escaped this encounter, but was found a short while later in the town of Springdale. He fired on police there, too. Another chase began, one that moved from Springdale down to Fayetteville, where he surrendered and was taken into custody.

During the various exchanges of gunfire, Cobos-Cenobio had been hit in his left arm. None of the officers were injured.

Cobos-Cenobio is now in custody and has been charged with attempted capital murder. “He was also arrested in connection with committing a terroristic act, fleeing, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia,” Daily Mail writes.
