A father would do anything for his daughter, especially if an armed man entered his home after midnight and was found standing over his 13-year-old daughter who was sleeping in bed. One father is being lauded as a hero for keeping his children safe after he shot an intruder who broke into his house earlier this week.

A 45-year-old unnamed Texas father heard a strange noise coming from his teen daughter’s bedroom shortly after midnight. As he approached her door, he found an armed man standing in his daughter’s bedroom, Fox News reported.

Concerned for his child’s safety, the father sprung into action and began to fight for possession of the unknown man’s firearm. After a brief struggle, the father was able to wrestle the firearm away from the suspect. He then shot the suspect multiple times.

The gunshots caused nearby neighbors to check on the family. The homeowner’s four other children were also in the home at the time. According to The Chronicle, a neighbor reportedly witnessed the suspect, who had already been shot multiple times, grab a kitchen knife and stab himself.

Law enforcement arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and took the suspect to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. It’s unclear whether his death is due to the shots fired by the homeowner or his self-inflicted stab wounds.

A police investigation concluded that the suspect gained entrance into the home from a basement window facing towards the street. Detective Blake Roberts, the lead investigator on the case, was fielding questions from the media when he was asked if the suspect knew the homeowner.

“This appears to be random,”  Roberts replied. “Of course, it’s still under investigation — we still have a lot of research to do on the male that broke into the house as far as his criminal history, his mental history and anything we can find in order to determine what would be the motive for this.”

The father is not expected to be charged in the shooting or subsequent death of the suspect.
