Last weekend hundreds of college athletes had their dreams come true when they were drafted by one of 32 NFL teams. One draftee, Dre Greenlaw, who played college ball at the University of Arkansas, was thanked by a father who claimed Greenlaw protected his daughter at a party when the two were freshmen in college.

After Greenlaw was drafted by the San Franciso 49ers in the fifth round, Gerry Dales wrote a series of tweets detailing a story he had “never told anyone before.” According to Dales’ tweets, Greenlaw and his daughter were at a “kegger” one night during their freshman year.

The two already knew each other from high school. When Greenlaw noticed Dales’ daughter acting a bit woozy, he realized something was wrong.

A man that Greenlaw had never seen before tried to take Dales’ daughter from the party, but Greenlaw stopped him.  “When that guy tried to steer my daughter out the front door, he stopped the guy and said: “She’s not going anywhere.”‘

Thankfully, Greenlaw stood 6’0 and weighed over 240 pounds, which stopped the man from trying to force his way out with the young girl. Dales’ daughter had to be taken to the hospital, and it was determined that a drug had been slipped into her drink, the Daily Mail reported.

At the time of the incident, Dales wanted to personally thank Greenlaw for helping his daughter that night, but Dales also didn’t want to cause any trouble for Greenlaw who was under the age of 21 at the time and at a party, which the NCAA tends to frown upon. Dales posted the tweet after Greenlaw was drafted and was not subject to NCAA rules.

Dales understood that Greenlaw risked “everything” to protect his daughter. “He was a starter on the Razorbacks,” Dales tweeted. “His place was not secure. He was underage and at a kegger. He wasn’t drinking, but if there was a fight he was risking getting thrown off the team. In some ways, he was risking everything.”

He added:  “And he risked it for my daughter. The guy backed down, and no one saw him again. No one at the party seemed to know who he was, and my daughter and her friends never saw him again. I didn’t ever tell this story, because maybe someone would say “oh, he shouldn’t have been at that party.” Maybe not. But he had my daughter’s back, and for that I will always owe him.”
