Conspiracy theorists have run the “body-double” idea up the proverbial flagpole before. During the run up to the 2016 Presidential election, there was rampant speculation that Hillary Clinton was using a body double to hide a diaspora terminal illnesses. Now the new target is Melania Trump, or the person wearing a fake nose and sunglasses pretending to be the First Lady.
After Clinton’s electoral college defeat, many simply dropped the assertions that she wasn’t who she claimed to be. The best indication that Clinton didn’t use a body double may be that no body double was blamed for her 2016 loss.
The current First Lady, though, is facing tougher scrutiny.
As the Daily Mail reports, the theory is that “Melania Trump has a body double who appears alongside the President in public wearing a fake nose and giant sunglasses.”
The subject of the faux Melania exploded Wednesday. “Critics zeroed in on footage of Trump from Friday as he addressed the media about hurricane relief for Puerto Rico that showed the First Lady, wearing her large black sunglasses, standing behind her husband nodding,” the Daily Mail writes.
The fake nose and sunglasses are one aspect, but the President’s own behavior is the other. President Trump seemed eager to establish that Melania was with him, even though she was standing right behind him.
“My wife, Melania, who happens to be right here,” Trump said.
Unlike many theories, this one seems to have a concrete starting point. A Facebook by Andrea Wagner Barton touched off the madness and went viral.
While some seem overly obsessed with the state of the First Lady, others have taken the opportunity to meme it up.
So would the real First Lady please stand up?
