Lightning never strikes twice, the old adage claims. Yet one of the concert goers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival sees things differently. She was there at the concert where 59 people were murdered. These types of crimes are rare in this country, but it wasn’t this woman’s first mass shooting.

Melissa Castruita was at work in San Bernardino, California, in 2015 when two terrorists opened fire. And she was in Las Vegas last weekend when gunfire erupted from high overhead.

Castruita had been up near the stage when Jason Aldean was taken off-stage October 1st. After the shooting began, she texted her fiance, J.C. Monticone. After expressing some of the confusion, she simply wrote “active shooter.”

This wasn’t the first time she’d sent those exact words. On December 2, 2015, she was at work at the Inland Regional Center when the San Bernardino, shooting began. 14 people were killed.

Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik were killed after police pursued them through the streets of the California town.

Castruita was in Las Vegas last Sunday celebrating her 34th birthday.

After the shooting in California, Castruita became nervous around crowds. Her office was closed during the investigation, so Monticone and Castruita went to Disneyland. While it was a distraction, the chaos of the crowds proved too much and she had to leave.

Monticone wasn’t with her Sunday night. He was in the Luxor Casino. Even though the text chain makes it look like he was a bit slow with his response, The Daily Mail reports that he rushed out to find her.

Though she’d been caught in the line of fire, she was able to find cover. When the shooter paused, Castruita fled. She followed the momentum of the crowd and found shelter inside another casino.
