Budweiser is Launching Beer Ingredients into Space for Science

After announcing its intention to become “the first beer on Mars” in March, Budweiser is taking its first step toward making that interstellar dream a reality. In early December, the brewer is set to have barley sent to the International Space Station. The carrier of the shipment will be SpaceX, the space transportation services company founded by Elon Musk.

Budweiser shared the details in a press release, including their intention to have the barley orbit Earth for one month because having it returned to terra firma.

As reported by Fox News, the intention is to explore the effects of a microgravity environment on the grain.

After the barley returns to Earth, Budweiser’s “innovation team” is going to attempt to germinate the barley seeds to see if it is viable.

“Budweiser is always pushing the boundaries of innovation, and we are inspired by the collective American Dream to get to Mars,” said Ricardo Marques, the Vice President at Budweiser, in a statement. “We are excited to begin our research to brew beer for the red planet.”

The company also asserts that their efforts offer additional benefits besides brewing beer on Mars, stating the experiment could also provide insight into Earth-based agricultural practices. However, Budweiser says that the primary goal is to supply “a colonized red planet with the same enjoyments provided here on Earth,” once the demand exists.

Budweiser initially announced their intention to ensure Mars would not be without beer during a panel discussion at the South by Southwest conference held last March. Executives discussed the potential obstacles the company would face to make its goal a reality, including limited water and sunlight, and atmospheric pressure issues that would lead a traditional beer to become “foamy slop.”

Regardless of the challenges, Budweiser promised to be ready when it came time to “toast on Mars” once it was colonized.

“With this bold, new dream, Budweiser is celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit in which our iconic brand was founded upon,” said Marques.

“Through our relentless focus on quality and innovation, Budweiser can today be enjoyed in every corner of the world, but we now believe it is time for the King of Beers to set its sights on its next destination. When the dream of colonizing Mars becomes a reality, Budweiser will be there to toast the next great step for mankind.”
