And a tweet from NBC News:

Reports indicate that Mateen was on the FBI’s radar prior to the attack. According to The Daily Beast:

The senior law enforcement source reports that Mateen became a person of interest in 2013 and again in 2014. The Federal Bureau of Investigation at one point opened an investigation into Mateen but subsequently closed the case when it produced nothing that appeared to warrant further investigation.

“He’s a known quantity,” the source said. “He’s been on the radar before.”

Mateen’s father has denied that the attack was connected to the family’s following of Islam, but instead was due to his son’s hatred of gay people.

An account associated with ISIS has tweeted a photo of Mateen while other accounts associated with Islamic extremism have tweeted support for the attack along with anti-gay rhetoric.
