Another round of Democratic debates took place Thursday night with candidates giving their vision and opinion on a number of hot topic issues. It was no surprise that the topic of gun control was discussed as a means of mitigating the ever-growing number of mass shootings. Presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke took an especially hard stance when it came to AR-15s.

The Texas Congressman didn’t mince words when asked about gun control. “Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” O’Rourke said to the applause from the Houston, Texas crowd. “We’re not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans anymore.”

This was the first time any Democratic candidate has suggested an outright ban on certain firearms. Other candidates gave less aggressive suggestions for gun control, but all agreed that America needs to require universal background checks.

To no one’s surprise, O’Rourke’s comment ruffled a few feathers, especially among Republicans. Texas State Representative Briscoe Cain replied to O’Rourke’s comments on Twitter stating: “My AR is ready for you Robert Francis.”

According to the Daily Mail, O’Rourke and his campaign took this as a threat and reported it to the FBI and Twitter. The social media platform removed the post citing it violated their terms of service.

It’s currently unclear if the FBI plans to act on the matter. O’Rourke furthered the uproar selling a shirt on his campaign website for $30 with the slogan: “Hell, yes, we are going to take your AR-15s.”

On Friday, O’Rourke was asked how he would implement such a ban if he was elected president. “It’s expecting Americans to follow the law. And I know that they will,” he told MSNBC.

“I’m going to work with police chiefs, with sheriffs with law enforcement to make sure we implement this in the most effective way possible,” he added. “It will by and large be dependent with people complying with the law.”

He later clarified to concerned citizens that there would be no door-to-door seizures. “It is mandatory. It will be the law. You will be required to comply with the law. As with many of our laws we won’t be going door-to-door, searching people’s homes to see if they are in fact breaking the law. We expect them to comply with the law.”
