Apple to Manufacture Mac Pro in Texas

Apple is notorious for manufacturing its electronics overseas, specifically in China, something Donald Trump has taken issue. On Monday, Apple announced a significant game-changer: The new Mac Pro will be manufactured in Austin, Texas. This is currently the only Apple product scheduled to be made in America at this time, but it would be welcome news if this signals a change in Apple’s future product production.

Apple made this decision with two factors in mind: The tariffs on China could hurt them, and they are committed to economic growth in America. According to CNBC, the new Mac Pro will feature two times more American made products than its previous iterations.

These manufactured goods are coming from Arizona, Maine, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Vermont, according to an Apple press release.

“The Mac Pro is Apple’s most powerful computer ever and we’re proud to be building it in Austin. We thank the administration for their support enabling this opportunity,” Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said in a statement Monday.

Apple’s decision came after Trump made it clear over the summer he would not exclude the tech company from impending tariffs on China. “Apple will not be given Tariff waiver, or relief, for Mac Pro parts that are made in China. Make them in the USA, no Tariffs!” Trump tweeted on July 26.

Cook explained how manufacturing in America will help states with job growth. “We believe deeply in the power of American innovation. That’s why every Apple product is designed and engineered in the US, and made up of parts from 36 states, supporting 450,000 jobs with US suppliers, and we’re going to continue growing here.”

Over the summer, Trump expressed his admiration for Cook. “A man I have a lot of liking for and respect is Tim Cook, and we’ll work it out, I think they’re going to announce that they’re going to build a plant in Texas, and if they do that I’m starting to get very happy, okay.”

Apple’s laptops make up 10 percent of the company’s revenue, with a predominant amount coming from its phone and tablets. The new Mac Pro is being listed at the starting price of $5,999.
