This month, QSR Magazine, a publication that focuses on the limited-service restaurant industry, including fast food, released its list of the most successful fast-food chains in the country. The entries represent some of the most recognizable names in the world of food, including powerhouses like McDonald’s and the comparatively small, but mighty, Chick-fil-A.
The list is based on US system sales, covering earnings from the prior year. Here are the top 10 limited-service restaurants in America, based on 2017 data.
McDonald’s continues to hold the number one spot. The company “enjoyed its best sales growth in six years,” according to the QSR Magazine report, coming in with nearly $37.5 billion in sales.
With just shy of $13.2 billion in sales, the difference between first and second place on the list is stark. This is especially true since Starbucks actually made more last year, further widening the gap.
From a location standpoint, Subway is the biggest fast-food chain on the globe. With $10.8 billion in US sales, it hits number three on the list.
4. Burger King
The second burger-based entry on the list, Burger King hit just over the $10 billion mark. Additionally, the company moved up one place, as it was in the number five slot on last year’s report.
5. Taco Bell
Coming in with nearly $9.8 billion, Taco Bell advanced from sixth to fifth place on the list.
Falling from number four, Wendy’s recorded almost $9.3 billion in sales.
7. Dunkin’ Donuts
With just below $9.2 billion in US sales, Dunkin’ Donuts remained in the number seven slot. However, the company’s systemwide sales increased by approximately $1 billion in a year, showing substantial growth.
Hitting the $9 billion, Chick-fil-A also increased sales by about $1 billion, an expressive feat considering the chain’s smaller footprint in the country.
Domino’s came in with $5.9 billion, displacing Pizza Hut as the number one pizza seller. While it’s a far cry from the number eight entry, the chain experienced a sales increase of about $600,000 during 2017.
10. Pizza Hut
At just over $5.5 billion, Pizza Hut rounds out the top ten for 2018. Sales actually fell when compared to 2016. It also dropped from the number nine spot, as Domino’s overtook them.
