Molly Lensing, a mother of three, was chastised on social media after a picture emerged showing her on her phone while her infant was laid down on the floor. The caption on the image read, “Albert Einstein said, ‘I fear the day that technology will take on our humanity… the world will be populated by a generation of idiots.”
After the photo went viral, Lensing was criticized by other social media users who were determined to shame her for her actions. But Lensing came forward, describing the situation that transpired when the image was taken, showing that the single photo didn’t tell the whole story.
Lensing and her two-month-old daughter were stranded at a Colorado airport in 2016 after multiple flight delays and subsequent re-bookings. The pair were sitting at a gate when a man seated nearby took the photo and posted it on Facebook. He did not ask permission to take the picture or to share it on social media. Lensing only became aware of the image after it was shared over 65,000 times.
After the post, Lensing became a victim of harassment and cyberbullying, with many claiming she was “ignoring” her child by using her cellphone.
In the end, she decided to come forward to speak about what the photo alone can’t tell viewers.
“We had the unfortunate luck of being stuck in the middle of the Delta computer shutdown,” said Lensing.
She and her daughter had spent over 20 hours waiting in various airports as the attempted to get to their destination. The infant had spent many long hours in her carrier and, according to Lensing, needed to stretch out while they continued to wait.
After placing her daughter on a blanket on the floor, Lensing needed to get in contact with her family who had become worried. She used her cellphone to reach out.
Lensing, a pediatric nurse from Illinois, originally worried that the viral image would harm her reputation at work or potentially lead to her termination from her position. Ultimately, that wasn’t the case, and Lensing actually experienced an outpouring of support from others who understood her actions in the context of the situation.
