A curfew has been instituted and social media access in the country has been shut down following the attacks, so getting images, video and details about the ongoing situation is somewhat difficult.
Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena called the attacks ‘cowardly’.
‘I call upon all Sri Lankans during this tragic time to remain united and strong. Please avoid propagating unverified reports and speculation. The government is taking immediate steps to contain this situation,’ Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks as of yet, but there were warnings over a week ago that Islamic extremists may be planning to target churches in the area.
President Trump tweeted his condolences after learning of the attack, as did former President Barack Obama:
Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith announced that all remaining Easter services for the country will be canceled in light of the attacks.
