ISIS Claims Responsibility For NYC Terror Attack. Trump Responds With Military Action

Days after an alleged terrorist drove a rented truck over a bike path, killing eight, ISIS has claimed the man as one of their own. This isn’t surprising, as ISIS claims many such attacks. This one, though, follows the ISIS call to action more closely, and so the President has launched retaliatory strikes and is hitting ISIS “much harder,” since the Oct. 31 attack.

The President, Friday, embarked on a five-country tour of Asia. Before he left, he tweeted about 29-year-old Uzbek national Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, who was here in the United States legally, a “Degenerate Animal.”

“ISIS just claimed the Degenerate Animal who killed, and so badly wounded, the wonderful people on the West Side, was ‘their soldier,'” Trump tweeted. “Based on that, the Military has hit ISIS ‘much harder’ over the last two days. They will pay a big price for every attack on us!”

Just how he has stepped up the pressure on ISIS remains unclear, though he said it “took place yesterday.” Instead, he suggested that he intends to hit ISIS “10 times harder” each time they attack the United States.

The ISIS claim of responsibility came Thursday in the al-Naba newspaper. The paper labeled Saipov a “Soldier of the Caliphate.”

CNN, reporting on the escalation in military strikes, notes, “data from the United States Central Command, the US launched 11 airstrikes on November 1 and 13 strikes on November 2 against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.”

“Those numbers are consistent with the airstrikes launched against ISIS before the attack,” they add. “According to CENTCOM, coalition military forces conducted 10 strikes on October 26, eight strikes on October 27, eight strikes on October 30 and 13 strikes on October 31.”

The future of Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov remains in question. He survived his own attack on the pedestrians in lower Manhattan, only to be shot by a NYPD officer. The gunshot wound in Saipov’s stomach stopped his aggression, but didn’t kill him. Saipov was carrying a paintball gun and a pellet gun, presumably to provoke officers to shoot him.

President Trump has called for Saipov to be tried as an enemy combatant, and for him to be detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The detention and trial, though, cannot proceed as Trump hopes, due to the legal immigration status of Saipov.
