Laura Mesi, a fitness instructor, became frustrated after her nearly 20-year search for “Prince Charming” yielded no results. Instead of waiting, she decided to marry herself, coordinating a full-scale ceremony that included the traditional white dress, a three-layer cake, and invitations sent to 70 guests. In total, the event cost her around £8,700.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Mesi, 40, decided to have a wedding ceremony and even went on a honeymoon to Egypt to celebrate the event, though the union isn’t legally recognized.
Mesi had previously been in a long-term relationship that, after 12 years, came to an end in 2015.
“I told friends and family that if I had not found my soulmate by my 40th birthday, I would marry myself,” said Mesi during an interview with the La Repubblica newspaper.
“If one day I find a man with whom I can plan a future, I’ll be happy, but my happiness does not depend on him.”
Mesi described the event as “my fairytale wedding – only without Prince Charming.”
The wedding ceremony involved many traditional elements, including bridesmaids and a diamond ring. The cake featured only a single figure on the top, a woman in a wedding dress that somewhat resembled Mesi.
Self-marriage, also known as “sologamy,” has become a growing trend across the globe. Many of its supporters state it is a ceremony focused on acceptance and self-love.
The Italian fitness instructor celebrated her big day in Lissone, Lombardy, with the entire event captured by a photographer.
After the wedding, Mesi embarked on a solo honeymoon to Egypt.
