With the new year comes new movies. Depending on your taste in films, some of you may have been disappointed in last year’s offerings from the studios. Don’t fret though because this year looks to provide several promising films — especially in the highly coveted sci-fi genre.

God Particle (Cloverfield 3)
There have been little snippets of information released for the newest Cloverfield movie. A synopsis of the film claims that people on an international space station come in contact with some form of extraterrestrial.
Even if you haven’t seen any of the previous films, you can still watch the newest installment in the series. The only clip teasing the film’s upcoming release came from 10 Cloverfield Lane radio audio.
If you were a fan of the 2016 film “Ex Machina,” this film should be right up your alley. Alex Garland, the same man who directed the aforementioned film, has taken the helm to create a film from Jeff VanderMeer’s best selling books, the Southern Reach Trilogy.
The cast looks promising with Natalie Portman acting as the main protagonist. She has been on a roller coaster ride ever since her excellent performance portraying Jackie Kennedy last year. As if you needed any other reason to see this film, VanderMeer went on record a couple of months ago and said the ending of the film is even more surreal and heart-pounding than the book.
Pacific Rim Uprising
It’s been almost five years since we have had a Pacific Rim film. The first one was a pleasant surprise to many while others found the film divisive. The installment looks promising as Star Wars superstar John Boyega is the lead in the Guillermo del Toro’s produced film.
Ready Player One
Steven Spielberg has brought to life Ernest Cline’s bestseller novel of the same name, and it’s safe to say this film is one of the most anticipated sci-fi films of the year. March 2018 will bring us to the year 2045 where the world is on the brink of chaos and collapse.
The only joy people have to look forward to is the OASIS, a virtual reality world used as an escape from real-world struggles. The film blends pop-culture and sci-fi films into one.
The New Mutants
The New Mutants seems to be a new spin-off of the X-Men films. Now hear me out, we know the market is oversaturated with superhero movies at the moment, but this film seems to provide a new take on the superhero formula.
The film seems to incorporate a bit from the horror/thriller genre as the young mutants are presumably locked away in an insane asylum because they cannot control their powers. This movie could be great or it could be terrible. There won’t be an in between with this film.
Avengers: Infinity War
It’s all been leading up to this. The Marvel Universe’s climax will include a complete roster of all the recent Marvel superheroes. Oh, and did I mention, Guardians of the Galaxy is in the film also?
The protagonist is Thanos, a purple god of sorts that is hell-bent on acquiring all of the infinity stones, hence the name of the film. This film will surely obliterate the box office in 2018 and for good reason.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
To save the best for last, the newest Jurassic World film is the follow-up to the successful 2016 film. The revamping of the Jurassic series was a massive success. The film’s trailer shows the dinosaurs have taken over the island, and the government wants to blow the whole island up just to be safe.
Chris Pratt is now accompanied by actor Jeff Goldblum who was one of the main characters in the original series. Talk about a summer blockbuster.
