Celebrities die every year. To pretend like they don’t would be an exercise in absurdity. But 2016 is getting a reputation. A bad reputation. The grim reaper seems particularly voracious. How do you hold an insatiable reaper at arm’s length? One man is trying GoFundMe–and not for himself; he’s trying to protect Betty White.

There are still two full days left in the year. Late Wednesday night, news broke that Debbie Reynolds had passed. Reynolds was famous in her own right for cinematic masterpieces like Singing in the Rain, but she was also the mother of Carrie Fisher. We now know how her story ended, too.
With this in mind, a man from South Carolina is attempting the impossible. He’s promising to keep the 94-year-old comedic icon Betty White safe through the end of 2016.
Demetrios Hrysikos, of Spartanburg, set up the GoFundMe page Tuesday. He’s asking for donations to support his effort to keep the legendary actress safe until 2017.
The page description reads “Help 2016 catch these hands if it goes anywhere near Betty White! If she’s okay with it I will fly to where ever Betty White is and keep her safe till Jan 1 , 2017.”
Before you dismiss this as a hoakie way to possibly earn some quick cash, Hrysikos seems to be on the level. While there’s no indication as to what he might be able to do to prevent 2016 from claiming another victim, his heart is in the right place. If it turns out that White doesn’t want or need Hrysikos’ services, he promises to donate all the money raised to the Spartanburg Little Theater “to help craft new stars of stage and screen to carry mantle of the legends that have left [us] this year.”
So apologies to Pat Harrington, David Bowie Alan Rickman, Alan Rickman, Dan Haggerty, Glen Frey, Abe Vigoda, George Gaynes, Tony Burton, George Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Robert Horton, Joe Santos, Joe Garagiola, Ken Howard, Peter Brown, Garry Shandling, James Noble, Patty Duke, Doris Roberts, Prince, William Schallert, Morley Safer, Alan Young, Mohamed Ali, Anton Yelchin, Noel Neill, Gary Marshall, Steven Hill, Gene Wilder, Hugh O’Brien, Arnold Palmer, Robert Vaughn, Florence Henderson, Ron Glass, Van Williams, John Glenn, Alan Thicke, Bernard Fox, Zsa Zsa Gabor, George Michael, Carrie Fisher, Debby Reynolds… White won’t be coming this year.
