Here’s What Happens When You Play With a Fidget Spinner on the International Space Station [VIDEO]

People love fidget spinners. There are entire Youtube channels devoted to unboxing new spinners, and now it seems even NASA astronauts have gotten in on the craze. Astronauts located on the International Space Station decided to create their own viral video of how fidget spinners work in space.

In the video published on Youtube, NASA astronauts Mark T. Vande Hei, Joseph Acaba, Randy Bresnik, and Paolo Nespoli all decided to take a break from the grind of keeping an entire space station fully functional to play with the spinners. Well, actually to conduct an experiment.

But to understand their experiment, first you have to understand how the spinners actually work. Without going into every boring detail, the spinner gets torque from the device being spun. But the device is constantly trying to push back in the opposite direction, and this push and pull is what allows the device to balance.

There are little bearing balls located in the middle, and by creating the least amount of friction possible, the device is able to spin longer. On Earth, the center part stays still until momentum slows it down. In space, there is nothing to slow it down, especially since there’s no gravity weighing it down.

Apparently, the device doesn’t handle any differently in a zero gravity environment. But it seems they’re just as fun to use in space. With a few edits, the team of astronauts created some cool footage of the spinners doing all kinds of “tricks.” But be forewarned: Watching all that spinning might make you queasy.

Thankfully, just before nausea begins to set in, the video jumps to the coolest part of the entire video — a fidget spinner spinning on its own with a spectacular window shot of the earth in the background.

So even if you are feel you’ve already seen one video too many of fidget spinners, make an exception and watch one more. This is one you’ll want to watch.
