Lately, it seems that every year brings an overabundance of classic film remakes. Most of these seem to be a cheap cash-in using an already established movie title. But, in other instances, directors put a unique twist on the retelling of a well-known story. And a lot of times, fans don’t like seeing their favorite films redone.
Disney, who has rebooted their classic animated films and turned them into live-action, plans to take their filmography overhaul one step further. Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced the company would be rebooting classic 1990 and early 2000 films such as “Home Alone” and “Night at the Museum” for a “new generation.”
Macaulay Culkin, who famously played Kevin McCalister in Home Alone, took to Twitter to discuss the various classic films he would like to see remade.
“I hope the Space Jam reboot kicks off a whole slew of 80s/90s sports movie remakes. Field of Dreams with @ChrisEvans, A League of Their Own with @KristenBell and @TessaThompson. Also it would be cool if Daffy Duck was in all of these.”
Apparently, Disney was listening when Culkin made his post as days later they announced their intention to remake several major films. That seems to be a major coincidence, so it would come as little surprise if this was just a clever marketing ploy. One person who commented under Culkin’s post simply stated: “Look what you’ve done.”
Disney acquired the rights to Home Alone after they bought out 21st Century Fox earlier this year, the Daily Mail reported. Along with Home Alone and Night at the Museum reboot, Disney also announced plans to reboot “Cheaper by the Dozen” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.”
It’s currently unclear if these films will be made for theatre showings or if Disney intends to put them directly on their streaming service “Disney +,” which is being released on November 12 of this year.
This has understandably made fans of the original classic films a bit touchy. One person commented on social media: “NOOOO DISNEY STAY AWAY!!! STOP TRYING TO REBOOT EVERYTHING. HOME ALONE IS PERFECT THE WAY IT IS. STAY IN YOUR LANE DISNEY. STAY IN YOUR LAAANNNEEEE.”
Another person, who is seemingly tired of the gaggle of remakes, commented: “disney really gotta make a reboot of home alone along with all the live action movies because apparently they got no originality anymore.”
It seems Disney is facing an uphill battle when it comes to their reboot announcement.
