Monntel West was bored while walking through the mall in Lansing, Michigan Friday night and decided to sit down at a piano in the center of the food court.
The 18-year-old has no formal musical training but taught himself to play piano in 8th grade with the help of a keyboard and YouTube videos, proceeded to blow people away with his rendition of “River Flows in You” by South Korean pianist and composer Yiruma. He played the piece from memory because he hasn’t been able to teach himself sheet music yet.
“I had goosebumps,” Sara Hadley, who was in the mall at the time said. Hadley filmed almost two minutes of West’s performance on her phone, posting the video to Facebook and garnering more than 225,000 views.
West not been able to afford piano lessons, but plans to study music management at Lansing Community College before transferring to Michigan State University.
“If I did get lessons, I think I could be better,” West said. “You can always get better.”
The video was submitted to the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” with many fans calling on Ellen to give West the opportunity to expand on his gift.
