Scientists have been playing with sound for a while, but for the first time, objects can be moved with just one set of speakers. More than that, they can be moved toward the speakers.
The scientist working on this project, Aser Marzo, has pointed to applications from surgery to tangible holograms using small holograms to surgery without incision. The sound beam is strong enough to manipulate objects in the air, but still needs to be tested in other materials. Still, we are one step closer to the true Sci-Fi future of the Doctor.
Marzo himself is a bit dismissive of sci-fi applications, but he also considers making 3-D sound paintings via several thousand leviating particles ‘simple’. Maybe I need to catch up on science fiction?
