FBI Director James Comey announced to Congress Monday that the FBI is investigating the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.

CNN’s initial report, the first available information on this story, says the FBI has “human intelligence, travel, business and phone records and accounts of in-person meetings.” Their investigation is ongoing.

In his statement before Congress, Comey acknowledged that the FBI had been examining ties between Russians and the Trump campaign. This investigation came after the FBI had found what Comey called “a credible allegation of wrongdoing or reasonable basis to believe an American may be acting as an agent of a foreign power.”

The White House has not commented on these latest allegations, though they were quick to refute Comey assertions Monday. Trump himself called the whole episode “fake news.”

White House press secretary Sean Spicer pointed out that the allegations had still not been substantiated. “Investigating it and having proof of it are two different things,” Spicer said.

CNN’s source, though, is providing a different picture. “People connected to the campaign were in contact and it appeared they were giving the thumbs up to release information when it was ready.”

If this were to be proven true, it would be disastrous for Trump.

The FBI, once seen as working on behalf of Trump against Clinton, is investigation a long list of Trump associates. Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, Roger Stone and Carter Page are all under investigation.

These current allegations are tied to the release, last July, of Hillary Clinton related emails. The emails were released in batches, and further undermined the nation’s confidence in Clinton. The release of the emails, becasue they were related to campaign activities, constituted a serious break of national security, and are still being investigated by the FBI’s counterintelligence division.
