Prisons are dangerous. When you put thousands of men and women together that are deemed unable to live in society, you are bound to have some violence tendencies. Prisoners also have their own rules and hierarchy they live by. This time it saved a guard’s life.

Falkenburg Road Jail in Tampa, Florida was the scene of an attack that security cameras captured. In the video, inmate Kiondre Zachery is seen coming up behind a guard with a towel in his hand. He then slings the towel around the unsuspecting guard’s neck and proceeds to strangle him.
As deputy D. Hernandez is struggling to breathe, 72 inmates are watching as this happens in front of them. Hernandez was able to free himself from the grasp of the 22-year-old inmate but not before being punched in the face.
The violent onslaught continues until the other innmates have seen enough. As Zachery is running around the pod with Hernandez in pursuit, the game of cat and mouse comes to a screeching halt as a group of inmates grab Zachery and wrestle him to the ground.
The inmates and the deputy hold Zachary to the ground until backup arrives. The guard suffered only minor injuries- a twisted ankle, bruised knee and abrasions to his neck but it could have ended very differently if it wasn’t for the other inmates.
The inmate was in jail for burglary and aggravated assult. According to records, Hernandez has only been a guard at the prison for 10 months. The Hillsbourogh sheriff department commended the other inmates for their good deed.
“Due to the overall professionalism and respect that detention deputies display towards the inmates on a daily basis, the inmates came to the deputy’s aid preventing the deputy from being seriously injured,” the sheriff’s office said. “It shows that because most inmates know that the deputies inside the pods are not adversaries and are treated fairly and with respect.”
It shows that if you treat the inmates with decency and don’t abuse your power, they can help you in a pinch. Inmates outnumber guards 3-to-1 and when the numbers are against you, it’s best to have a few of them you can rely on.
