In what appears to be a coordinated attack, police in London have been called to two locations after a van plowed through pedestrians on London Bridge and a knife attack was reported at a nearby café. Theresa May, the British Prime Minister, stated authorities are dealing with the “terrible incident” that is being treated as an act of terrorism.
Metropolitan police are saying the speeding van veered into the crowd hitting pedestrians on the London Bridge at approximately 10:08 p.m. local time. Recently released pictures show the white Hertz van that was believed to be involved.
A witness at the scene told stated that the van was heading south at a high rate of speed when it swerved, striking multiple people and even knocking on pedestrian “about 20 feet in the air.” It then went on to collide with a bus stop before coming to a stop.
At nearly the same time, reports stated three men were attacking members of the public with knives at nearby Borough Market, an area housing multiple gourmet food and produce stalls and home to numerous restaurants.
A witness stated, “A man suddenly appeared in the restaurant with a massive knife – some people in the restaurant believe there may have been another man, but it was so chaotic is was hard to tell.”
An eyewitness on London Bridge told the BBC he saw three men stabbing people indiscriminately, shouting “this is for Allah” in a “rampage.”
Another eyewitness, named only as Gerard, told the BBC: “I saw a geezer lying on the floor saying he’d been stabbed
“I saw these three Muslim guys run up and started stabbing this girl. They attacked her and stabbed another guy.
“They started running up the road, stabbed the bouncer at the Tavern.
“I was throwing bottles at them, pint glasses, stools, chairs, but I was defenceless.
“They were running up saying ‘this is for Allah’.
“They stabbed this girl maybe ten, 15 times. She was saying ‘help me, help me’.”
He claimed he had hit one of the attackers on the back of the head by throwing things at him, and was chased, but escaped unharmed.
At least one fatality has been confirmed, and multiple wounded are being transported to area hospitals.
Police in the area tweeted about the gunfire in the Borough Market area, saying, “Armed officers responded and shots have been fired.”
As reported by the BBC, witnesses in the area stated two attackers were shot by police and may have been killed. An additional three attackers are still believed to be on the run.
A social media user also posted a picture of a man lying face up on the ground with what appears to be multiple canisters strapped to his body.
People are still being asked to avoid the area and to monitor local news for additional details.
