It appears that the wife of Omar Mateen, the Islamic terrorist who killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida earlier this month is still missing. Based on news facts, it seems clear that Noor Salman may have known about the attacks and may have even assisted Mateen in scouting out locations.
Salman seems to have quickly fallen off law enforcement’s radar, at least officially, after giving statements to authorities in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
Attorney General said a press conference last Tuesday on whether authorities had Salman’s location, “Right now I do not know exactly the answer to that. I believe she was going to travel, but I do not know exactly her location now.”
Of course, it is possible Salman is in some sort of protective custody and that information may be protected due to the national security nature of the attack that took place and intelligence that she may be able to provide.
Here is what we have learned about Salman in the days and weeks since the attack.
1. She was texting with Omar Mateen while he was actively attacking the Pulse nightclub. She told Mateen that she loved him in one text message and attempted to call him, but there is no evidence they spoke on the phone. She made no attempt to notify the police after texting with Mateen.
2. Her mother is an outspoken Hamas supporter. Like Mateen’s father, who has voiced support for the Taliban in the past, it appears that Salman’s mother also supported a radical group in the Middle East. According to a recent Palm Beach Post article:
“How many snipers from Palestine deserve a bow from our heads as respect to them?” the mother wrote in a post on Oct. 6, 2013. A photo included with the post praises one fighter who “killed 11 Zionists.”
Recently, she has posted her support for Jamal Al-Taweel, an imprisoned Hamas official who — along with his wife and daughter — repeatedly have been detained and jailed by Israeli authorities. Hamas, branded a terrorist organization by the United States, is the ruling party in the Gaza Strip.
“My brother and friend, Jamal, rest assured that you are backed by a sister who prays for you night and day, asking God to release you from your imprisonment,” the mother wrote in a post on April 20, several days after an Israeli military court sentenced him to four years in prison for belonging to an illegal party that incites against Israel.
3. She was the official witness on documents Mateen signed transferring ownership of his home to his sister just before the attack. There is little doubt that gifting your sister and brother-in-law a house might be cause for alarm.
4. According to a Breitbart report, she might have known more about the attack than initially believed. From their report:
Salman was in Mateen’s company when he made visits to the Pulse nightclub and Disney Springs that have been characterized as scouting missions for future attacks, and she also accompanied him on at least one trip in early June to buy ammunition. CNN relayed her claim that she “didn’t know he was buying ammunition to kill people” and the assessment of investigators that she might not have fully understood he was scouting for a terrorist attack.
