Police are describing the carnage that took place in Lincoln County, Mississippi as a shooting spree that left eight people, including a thirty six year old sheriff’s deputy dead.

The deputy has been identified as William Durr, who had worked in law enforcement for six years prior to last night’s events. Police believe the shooting spree began with a domestic disturbance and then escalated.

According to local media reports:

The shooting spree began at approximately 11:30 p.m. with a domestic call at 2871 Lee Drive in Bogue Chitto. Four bodies, three females and the deputy, were recovered there, Strain said.

The second crime scene was located at 1658 Coopertown Road in Brookhaven. The bodies of two juvenile males were located there.

The third crime scene was located at 312 East Lincoln Road near Super Jack’s, and a male and a female were recovered at that location.

The suspect has been identified as Willie Corey Godbolt. Goodbolt briefly took a hostage at the end of the ordeal, but the sixteen year old boy was ultimately not harmed and Goodbolt was taken into custody by police.

While sitting on the ground handcuffed after his arrest, Goodbolt spoke into a reporter’s video camera from The Clarion Ledger and said that he did not deserve to live and hoped that police would kill him. His comments were:

“I ain’t fit to live, not after what I done.”

“I was having a conversation with her step-daddy and her mama and her, my wife, about me taking my children home. Somebody called the officer, people that didn’t even live at the house. That’s what they do. They intervene.”

“They cost him his life. I’m sorry,” Goodbolt said in reference to the deputy who he shot and killed.

Durr, the deputy who was killed is described as being a mild mannered officer who primarily worked with area youth groups and used puppets to reach out area youth. Durr was also a ventriloquist who used his act during his community outreach.

Goodbolt has a long criminal history with past charges including armed robbery, several instances of assault, disturbing the peace, and driving without a license among other minor charges throughout his life.

Goodbolt suffered one gunshot wound during the ordeal. It is not clear if it was officers or one of his victims who shot him. Goodbolt is being treated for the non life threatening injury at a local hospital.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant posted the following message on Facebook:

I ask all Mississippians to join Deborah and me in praying for those lost in Lincoln County. Every day, the men and women who wear the badge make some measure of sacrifice to protect and serve their communities.

Too often, we lose one of our finest. I thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their hard work. May the peace of the Almighty wash over those hurting after this senseless tragedy.

The following video shows the impromptu interview Goodbolt gave after he was apprehended.

And this video shows police holding Goodbolt on the ground as he yells out his love for his wife. An ambulance then comes and takes Goodbolt to an area hospital for treatment. An officer can be seen picking up an AR-15 rifle off the ground. It is unclear if that was Goodbolt’s weapon or one of the officer’s.
