This story has a happy ending, but it takes a while to get there. The South Carolina man who taped his dog’s muzzle shut to keep her quiet has been sentenced to five years in prison for his cruelty to his dog. The dog, as the photos below will show, is recovering from the torture and looks much better now.
Caitlyn is a 15 month old pit bull mix. She went through surgery after being freed and had to have part of tongue removed.
“Functionally, I think she’ll be able to lap up food and water and do really well,” Dr. Henry Bianucci told a local news affiliate.
William Dodson, the man who taped the dog’s mouth shut, was sentenced Friday. He received the state’s maximum sentence for animal cruelty. “I wish I could give you more,” said Judge Markley Dennis as he handed down the additional 5 year sentence.
In an odd twist, Dodson was sentenced to 15 years for a firearm related charge on Thursday. During a traffic stop in 2015, Dodson threw a loaded gun, cocaine, and marijuana out the window of his car. Sadly, his two sentences will run concurrently, so there’s no real benefit to his animal cruelty conviction beyond the rescue of Caitlyn.
Aldwin Roman directs Charleston Animal Society’s anti-cruelty and outreach. “We’re going to do everything we can within the law to stop this, and then we’re going to go beyond and change our laws and make them stronger,” he told The Post and Courier of Charleston.
Dodson, having grown tired of the dog’s barking, wrapped her muzzle with electrical tape nine times. The dog escaped, and was brought to veterinarians who spent 36 hours removing the tape. It had cut off the blood-flow to her muzzle and tongue.
The tape cut off blood flow to her tongue. Veterinarians at the Animal Society unraveled it after an estimated 36 hours.
Caitlyn now has a new home, though she remains scarred from Dodson’s cruelty.
